CLEVELAND, Ohio – A dominant offensive performance led to a 4-1 victory for the Green Bay women's soccer team over Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon.
Senah Hanes notched a hat trick, the 12th in program history (11th player to record such a feat) to propel the Green and White. Hanes' trifecta was the first since McKayla Kertscher on September 9, 2021, versus Northern Illinois.
GB improved to 3-5-4 overall (1-2-2 HL), while Cleveland State dropped to 0-11-1 (0-5-0 HL).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first shot of the day belonged to none other than Hanes, who buried it to give Green Bay an early 1-0 lead. GB had four shots off before CSU cracked its first shot in the 30th minute. The Vikings had a chance to tie the game right before the break, but goalkeeper Mallorie Benhart came up with a pair of saves after Erica Leinweber and Danielle Scott blasted a shot each.
Both teams began the second frame somewhat slowly, but Mayra Sesmas found a crease in the Phoenix defense and knotted the game at one apiece in the 50th minute. Each team had trouble getting into a rhythm offensively, and the match reached the 60-minute mark still tied 1-1. Cleveland State attempted to clear the ball in the 62nd minute but lost control in the midfield. Hanna Arvay took advantage, finding Grace Downey up the seam, and she scored the go-ahead goal. GB wasn't done yet, adding on in the 82nd minute with a goal from Hanes. Charlise Smith found no. 10 inside the box, who headed the ball in. Hanes took advantage of another mistake by the Vikings, scoring in the 88thminute, and the Phoenix won handily 4-1.
GAME NOTES
- Benhart recorded three saves for the Phoenix out of six total Vikings shots.
- Green Bay registered six shots on goal.
- GB held CSU to three shots each half and four total shots on goal.
- The Phoenix had five corner kicks to CSU's three.
