GREEN BAY, Wis. – Welcome back to the final February edition of Phoenix Weekly, presented by Capital Credit Union. The lone home event this week is Senior Night for the Green Bay women's basketball team on Saturday at 1 p.m.
WEEK IN REVIEW
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The Green Bay men's basketball team dropped two home games at the Kress Center this past weekend to Purdue Fort Wayne and Youngstown State.
On Friday, Purdue Fort Wayne defeated the Phoenix 85-59.
Will Eames paced the Phoenix (17-11, 12-5 HL) with 19 points, a career-high in his time with GB.
Clarence Cummings III added 13 points, while
Elijah Jones chipped in with 12. Eames and Cummings also led Green Bay with seven rebounds each on the night. Anthony Roberts dropped 31 points for the Mastodons, who improved to 18-10 overall and 9-8 in the Horizon League. Jalen Jackson tallied 17 points and Rasheed Bello tacked on another 16.
Elijah Jones and
Marcus Hall each had 12 points, but it wasn't enough for the Green Bay men's basketball team in a 71-59 loss to Youngstown State Sunday afternoon at the Kress Center. Both teams shot similar percentages, with YSU coming in at 47.3 percent to GB's 44.0 percent. YSU spread the wealth on offense, with five Penguins reaching double figures. Ziggy Reid and Brett Thompson paced YSU with 16 points apiece.
SOFTBALL
The Phoenix softball team won two of its five games at the Stetson Invitational this past weekend in DeLand, Fla. On Friday, Green Bay defeated LIU 4-3 in nine innings and lost to Maryland 8-0. Paige Hanson had two hits, including the team's first RBI vs LIU. Hailey Heckenlaible and Samantha Saloun had the next two RBIs. Sara Ebner drove in Paige Hanson in walk-off fashion to defeat the Sharks. Paeton Kringel picked up her first win of the 2024 season, pitching seven strong innings allowing three runs, two earned while recording seven strikeouts. Martha Miller also pitched well in two innings, allowing a lone hit and no runs in two innings pitched.
On Saturday, Green Bay dropped a doubleheader to Maryland and Stetson. The Phoenix lost 9-1 to Maryland and 4-3 to Stetson.
On Sunday, Green Bay defeated LIU again, 4-3. The Phoenix trailed 1-0 after the first three innings. Bella Herman drove in Laabs and Gianna Camacho to give the Phoenix a 2-1 lead. LIU tied the game at two with an RBI single from Mari Narvaiz in the bottom of the fifth. Heckenlaible and Laabs each had RBIs in the final two innings to lead the Phoenix to the win. Miller pitched six innings giving up two runs and striking out six, picking up her first collegiate win.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Green Bay women's basketball team picked up two big Horizon League wins, defeating Oakland and Detroit Mercy this past weekend.
On Thursday, Green Bay defeated Oakland 74-45, avenging a loss earlier this season to the Golden Grizzlies. The Phoenix defense was on lock in the first half, taking a 33-14 advantage into halftime.
Green Bay outscored Oakland 41-31 in the second half as well, coasting to a 29-point victory. Maddy Schreiber and Bailey Butler each recorded double-doubles, with Schreiber finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Butler finished with 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
On Saturday, the Phoenix beat Detroit Mercy 87-44. Green Bay outscored the Titans by nine or more in all four quarters leading to their largest win of the season at 43 points. Everything went Green Bay's way, forcing 23 turnovers and connecting on 10 threes, including four from Natalie Anderson. Anderson led the Phoenix with a season-high 18 points. Maddy Schreiber had 11 points, while Natalie McNeal added 10 points.
A LOOK AHEAD
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Green Bay men's basketball finishes its final regular season games of the 2023-24 season this week on the road at Cleveland State and Milwaukee on Wednesday and Saturday.
Cleveland State is currently tied for sixth in the Horizon League with a record of 10-8 and is 17-12 overall. The Vikings are strong on the boards, currently tied for second in the HL averaging 13.2 offensive rebounds per game. Tristan Enaruna leads Cleveland State in points averaging 20.0 per game, good for second in the Horizon League. Enaruna also leads the Vikings in rebounds per game at 6.6. Cleveland State is solid on both sides of the ball, coming in at fifth in the Horizon League averaging 76.5 points per game as a team. Cleveland State allows 73.6 points per game, good for sixth in the HL.
Milwaukee is tied with Cleveland State for sixth in the Horizon League including a record of 10-8 and is 15-14 overall. The Panthers are fourth in the HL in team points per game at 78.7. Milwaukee's defense is eighth in the Horizon League allowing 79.1 ppg. The Panthers are led by guard BJ Freeman, who averages 20.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game.
SOFTBALL
The Green Bay softball team has five games at the Lindenwood Invite this weekend. On Friday, the Phoenix start with a doubleheader vs Bellarmine and Lindenwood. Green Bay will face Lindenwood a second time along with Western Illinois on Saturday. On Sunday, the Phoenix will round out the invite against Western Illinois.
Through the first ten games of the season, Paige Hanson leads the Phoenix with a .333 batting average. Samantha Saloun is first on the team in RBIs with four. Ava Schill is eighth in the Horizon League with an ERA of 4.20.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Phoenix women's basketball team has a road game at Purdue Fort Wayne on Wednesday and is at home vs Milwaukee on Saturday for Senior Night
Purdue Fort Wayne is third in the Horizon League at 12-6 and is 19-10 overall. The Mastodons are first in three-pointers made per game in the HL at 8.4. Purdue Fort Wayne is also first in opponent three-point field goal percentage at 27.4 percent. Amellia Bromenschenkel leads the Mastodons at 13.3 points per game, good for ninth in the Horizon League. Bromenschenkel also leads the time in rebounds per game at 6.4.
Milwaukee has a Horizon League record of 9-10 and is 15-15 overall. The Panthers are third in the Horizon League for team field goal percentage at 43.2 percent. Milwaukee is second behind Green Bay in combined opponent rebounds allowing 32.3 per game. Kendall Nead is sixth in the Horizon League, averaging 14.3 points per game. Anna Lutz is the team's leading rebounder at 6.0 per game. Kamy Peppler is second in the HL in assists averaging 5.0 per game.
Green Bay is in pursuit of another Horizon League title, but has already clinched a top-two spot in the Horizon League and will host a Horizon League Tournament Quarterfinal game on March 7.
