Phoenix Falls to Milwaukee

Green Bay earns number two seed in Horizon League Tournament

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay women's basketball team nearly completed a second-half comeback but came up just short in a 65-61 loss to Milwaukee Saturday afternoon at the Kress Center.

GB (24-6, 17-3 HL) was led by Jenna Guyer's 14 points, while the Panthers (16-15, 10-10 HL) were paced by Kamy Peppler's 25 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Phoenix came out blazing, taking a quick 11-0 lead after Bailey Butler made a mid-range shot, forcing a Milwaukee timeout. MKE answered out of the timeout with a 7-0 run, cutting the deficit to four. Guyer was on fire in the opening frame, scoring GB's last seven points to help the Phoenix take a 20-12 advantage into the second quarter. It was the Panthers that flashed offensive prowess in the stanza, ripping off an 11-0 run to end the frame. Green Bay led by as much as 14 in the second quarter, but the lead was trimmed to one after Peppler banked in a deep triple at the buzzer, making it 34-33 Green Bay at intermission.

Milwaukee eventually started to pull away late in the third quarter, extending the lead to eight after a Peppler jumper. Jasmine Kondrakiewicz ensued with a shot, and MKE led 49-43 going into the fourth quarter. The Phoenix made things interesting, rattling off a 14-0 run, culminating in a layup from Natalie Andersen. Milwaukee came right back on a 12-3 run, and an Angie Cera trey gave MKE a 61-58 lead with 1:49 remaining. Green Bay couldn't answer offensively, and Cera and Peppler iced the game from the charity stripe. Saturday's loss was the first home defeat of the season for GB.
