GREEN BAY, Wis. – Shay Frederick has been named Assistant Coach/Director of Player Development for the women's basketball team. Head Coach Kayla Karius made the announcement today. Frederick, a product of Hortonville High School, is the final piece of Karius' staff that includes assistant coaches Sarah Bronk, Allie Alexander, Kate Peterson Abiad, and Liz Oswald (Assistant Coach/Director of Operations).

During her four years on the girl's basketball team at Hortonville High School, Frederick played under Celeste Ratka (Hoewisch), who was a member of Green Bay's Sweet 16 team in 2010-11 and was inducted into the Green Bay Phoenix Hall of Fame alongside Karius.

"I'm excited to welcome Shay Frederick to our coaching staff!" said Karius. "Shay was the grad assistant on my prior staff and has a great work ethic, relationship skills, and a passion for coaching. She had a great college playing career and will be able to use her experiences at the D1 level to teach and mentor our players. Hailing from the Fox Valley, Shay grew up attending UWGB camps and since then has always followed the tradition of Green Bay women's basketball. We're happy to welcome her home!".

Frederick comes to Green Bay following a stint as the Graduate Assistant for South Dakota women's basketball in 2023-24 under Karius. She held many responsibilities at USD, including coordinating all video for practice and games as well as video exchange between teams, video editing for film sessions, designing graphics, creating a digital monthly newsletter, and directing a summer basketball camp and community events. Frederick also assisted in recruiting efforts and individual skill development. Her efforts helped USD to a nine-win increase in one season (23 in 2023-24 compared to 14 in 2022-23) and an appearance in the Super 16 of the WNIT.

Prior to her move to the bench, Frederick played Division I women's basketball for five years, the first four coming at Valparaiso. She appeared in 116 games for the Beacons, shooting a career-best 42.1 percent and averaging a career-best 14.5 points per game during the 2020-21 season. At the end of her freshman campaign in 2018-19, she became the first Valpo player to garner MVC (Missouri Valley Conference) All-Freshman Team honors. Frederick started every game from her sophomore through senior seasons (84), earning First Team All-MVC honors in her junior and senior years. She led the MVC in assists and earned MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team honors in 2021 and 2022. In her last season with the Beacons, Frederick led the MVC and ranked 47th in the country in assists per game (4.8 APG). She also ranked fourth in the MVC and 99th in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio. Currently, Frederick ranks second all-time in Valpo history in assists (493) and seventh in scoring (1,264 points).

In her lone season with Butler, Frederick ranked fifth in the Big East in three-point field goal percentage (39.7). By the end of the season, she eclipsed 1,300 career points, 500 career assists, and 200 career three-pointers.

In March of 2023, she participated in the WBCA "So You Want to Be a Coach" Program at the Final Four in Dallas, Texas. Frederick, a Greenville, Wisconsin native, graduated summa cum laude from Valparaiso in May of 2022 with a bachelor's in marketing and a minor in sports management. She earned her master's in strategic communication from Butler.
