NORMAL, Ill. – The Green Bay women's soccer team played a close game against Illinois State but ultimately fell 2-1 to the Redbirds to open the 2024 regular season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GB (0-1-0, 0-0-0 HL) started strong, scoring within the first eight minutes. The Phoenix had an early chance on a corner kick, which bounced around off a few Redbirds before finding the left foot of
Hanna Arvay. The Hungary native snuck her shot just inside the right upright, scoring her fourth career goal to give Green Bay an early 1-0 advantage. The Phoenix maintained possession for the majority of the first half, but Illinois State cashed in on their last opportunity before intermission. ISU had a free kick after a foul on
Senah Hanes, and less than two minutes later, Sammi Cenek put ISU on the board, tying the game 1-1.
Illinois State took a page out of Green Bay's book and scored early in the second half off of a corner kick. It was an unfortunate string of events, with the ball caroming off
Mallorie Benhart's right hand before passing a couple of Phoenix defenders. Chloe Cline tallied her first collegiate goal on the assist by Jade Rehberger. GB had limited opportunities after halftime, first on a corner kick before
Trudy Quidzinski's shot in the final moments to the bottom right corner that was saved by Audrey Brown. ISU was able to drain the clock by possession as Green Bay fell in a close game, 1-2.
GAME NOTES
- Of Green Bay's five shots, Hanna Arvay and Lanie Weikert each had two. The duo also had a shot on goal.
- Cenek led the way offensively for ISU, tallying three shots.
