SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – It was a tough day two of the Utah Classic for the Green Bay volleyball team, as they fell to the UTP Miners in three sets (11-25, 21-25, 18-25). The nonconference loss moved Green Bay to 0-2 on the season.
Cora Behnke finished with seven kills on the day to lead the Phoenix offense. GB got 10 digs from Abby Gardner to lead them defensively, while Calli Gentry had 23 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | The Phoenix found themselves in an early hole, losing a tough first set 25-11. Green Bay scored the first point of the match but UTEP rallied off nine straight points to take control right away.
SET 2 | A 25-21 set-two loss put Green Bay in a 2-0 hole in the match. The Phoenix dropped the set in spite of a solid performance on the attacking end, putting together a .407 attack percentage with 13 kills.
SET 3 | UTEP finished the sweep with a 25-18 third-set win. The Miners were strong offensively in the frame, finishing with a .371 hitting percentage with 15 kills.
GAME NOTES
» UTEP outscored GB 60-31 on the day.
» Four Phoenix finished the match with 6+ kills, including Behnke, Danilynn Schell, Katie Schulz, and Diane Pichelman.
» UTEP finished the match with eight aces to Green Bay's one.
COMING UP
The Phoenix will close out the Utah Classic tomorrow against Utah at 1:30 p.m. CT. Next weekend GB will travel to Lubbock, Texas for the Texas Tech Invitational. They'll kick off the tournament by taking on FAU on Friday, Sept. 6 at 10:30 a.m. CT.
