DES MOINES, Iowa – A hard-fought contest ended in a draw for the Green Bay women's soccer team on Thursday afternoon.
The Phoenix (2-3-2) and Drake (0-4-4) each scored early first-half goals in the tie.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drake tallied the first handful of shots but it was Green Bay that got on the scoreboard first. Hanna Arvay delivered a pass to Senah Hanes, who found the back of the net to make it 1-0 GB in the 12th minute. It didn't take long for Drake to respond, however. After an offsides and a shot on goal, DU knotted the game at one apiece on Eve Blakey's goal in the 18th minute. Zoey Mahoney set her up on the assist. Each team found some opportunities in the final 15 minutes before halftime, but the match remained tied going into the break.
The Phoenix tried to get something going right away after halftime, but two offsides prevented any conversion. Laney Stark had a golden opportunity in the 60th and 61st minutes when she rattled off two shots on goal, but Drake goalkeeper Kate Hopma was able to save both. In the final minutes of the contest, GB had a corner kick that stopped short of the goal, and Drake had a shot on goal in the 84th minute that was saved by Mallorie Benhart. Benhart entered the contest to begin the second frame after Alondra Iriarte got the start for GB. Each team's defense was able to stall out the last few minutes, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
GAME NOTES
- The Bulldogs' Layla Kelbel led all players with four shots (three on goal).
- Iriarte and Benhart each made two saves.
- Drake outshot GB 12-8 overall and 5-4 on goal.
- The Phoenix racked up 16 fouls. Five yellow cards were handed out (three on DU, two on GB).
COMING UP
The Phoenix will have a week to prepare for the Horizon League opener. Green Bay will travel to Wright State and Northern Kentucky next weekend to conclude the current five-game road trip. Fans can watch both contests on ESPN+ and follow with live stats.
