GREEN BAY, Wis. – A thrilling women's soccer match ended in a 1-1 draw between Green Bay and Detroit Mercy on Thursday night at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
Laney Stark notched her first career goal for GB as the Phoenix moved to 2-4-4 overall and 0-1-2 in HL action, while UDM went to 4-6-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Green and White started strong, recording three shots in the first 18 minutes while holding UDM without a shot until the 25th minute. Laney Hoehnke missed wide right on the first opportunity of the night before Hanna Arvay had a golden chance in the 18th minute, but she missed high. Green Bay nearly took the lead in the 33rd minute when Stark blasted a shot, but Titans goalkeeper Marisa Silver dove on the ball for her first save of the evening. Senah Hanes and Stark would get another shot on goal, but Silver answered the bell each time, and the teams went into the break searching for a score.
Detroit Mercy came out of intermission blazing, firing four shots in the first seven minutes, but came up empty. Hailey Matthews got involved during the 56th minute, coming close to breaking through, but GB goalkeeper Mallorie Benhart tallied a save. The Phoenix was able to control the tempo of the game for a while after that, thanks to a relentless effort from Stark. The freshman had a shot on goal in the 57th minute, and following a substitution, she found the back of the net in the 65th minute. Stark's first career goal occurred on a pass from Arvay and Abby Lom before splitting defenders and sneaking her shot past Silver. Later, with less than 10 minutes to go, the Titans found a rhythm and answered with a goal by Abbey Lodato. Her goal was the difference, despite each team having several more opportunities, in the 1-1 draw.
GAME NOTES
- Detroit Mercy outshot Green Bay 15-11 overall and had a 9-6 edge on goal.
