MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Green Bay women's soccer team picked up its first win of 2024 with a 5-0 thrashing of Western Illinois. GB scored three goals in the first half and never looked back.
Freshman Senah Hanes scored two goals, the first of her career, to help propel Green Bay (1-3-1) out to an early lead. Hanna Arvay also scored in the first half, while Rebecca Stoeckmann added on in the second frame.
Western Illinois dropped to 0-4-0 with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It didn't take long for the Phoenix to get on the board. Charlise Smith connected with Hanes, who found the back of the net on the first shot of the day in the 4th minute. WIU tried to respond two minutes later, but Kayla Turner's shot was saved by Phoenix goalkeeper Mallorie Benhart. The Leathernecks had a few more opportunities after that but couldn't capitalize. Green Bay was able to get the offense going again, and after several substitutions, GB scored again. Hanna Arvay converted on an assist from Laney Stark, making it 2-0 Phoenix in the 23rd minute. Hanes ensued just 30 seconds later for an unassisted goal, and it was quickly 3-0. Green Bay allowed just one shot in the final 24:25 of the first half and went into the break up 3-0.
GB kept the foot on the gas out of intermission, scoring in the 57th minute on Rebecca Stoeckmann's first goal as a Phoenix. Green Bay's defense was poised in the second frame surrendering only three shots in the half. An own goal by the Leathernecks in the 79th minute made it 5-0 Green Bay, and the Phoenix cruised to a shutout victory.
