Phoenix Blanks Central Michigan 1-0

Senah Hanes' late goal makes difference

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Green Bay women's soccer program posted another clean sheet Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 blanking of Central Michigan.

Senah Hanes scored the game's lone goal in the 79th minute on an assist from Laney Stark.

Green Bay improved to 2-3-1 overall with the victory, while CMU dropped to 1-4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The contest started chippy, with each squad committing a foul before GB's Charlise Smith was handed a yellow card in the 6th minute. Green Bay was able to pile on chances early, forcing five saves in the first 36 minutes of action. Each shot on goal for the Phoenix was by a different player, as Elle Blessinger, Grace Downey, Hanna Arvay, Laney Stark, and Senah Hanes all recorded a SOG. Mallorie Benhart made a couple of saves for Green Bay and escaped an attempt in the 39th minute when CMU's Ashley Scesniak cranked a shot off the woodwork. Despite the opportunities, the game was knotted at 0-0 going into halftime.

The story stayed the same well into the second half. Going into the final 15 minutes, the game was still tied when Laney Stark had a breakaway chance. She fed Hanes, who snuck it past a diving Scesniak for the 1-0 lead. Central Michigan had just one shot on goal in the final 12:55, but Benhart made the save, and Green Bay shutout the Chippewas 1-0.
