Dominant Defense Leads Green Bay Past UW-Plateville in Exhibition Action

GREEN BAY, Wis. -The Green Bay women's basketball team made quick work of UW-Platteville in the team's lone exhibition game of the season, 72-34 at the Kress Events Center.

The Phoenix had two players score in double figures, led by Gracie Grzesk, who had 14 points, all in the first half. Meghan Schultz tacked on 10 points, nine rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks off the bench and Kristina Ouimette added eight points and three blocks.

Green Bay utilized great ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 18 assists on 29 made field goals. Schultz's five assists were the most for the Phoenix while Kamy Peppler contributed with three assists of her own.
Green Bay's defense held Wisconsin-Platteville to only 15-percent shooting from beyond the arc and 22-percent from the field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After playing to a 7-7 tie early in the game, Green Bay went on a 9-0 run with 5:03 left in the first quarter to take a 16-7 lead that they would never surrender. Green Bay did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 16 points close to the basket.
Green Bay kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 5:16 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Grzesk, to increase its lead to 30-16. The lead stayed at 14 as the Phoenix entered halftime up 34-21.

The third quarter was the most dominant of the night for Green Bay, outscoring Platteville 16-2 in the frame. GB held the Pioneers to 1-for-15 shooting in the quarter.

Green Bay ended the game on a 15-0 run, capped off by a Schultz layup with 21 seconds to go that gave them a 72-34 lead that was eventually the final.

GAME NOTES
» The Green Bay bench came alive by adding 36 points to its scoring output, while UWP had 10.
» The Phoenix turned 27 turnovers into 32 points.
» Green Bay had a 42-39 edge on the boards in the win.
» The Phoenix were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, recording seven blocks as a team.
» Green Bay shot 46-percent from the floor and 30.4-percent from three.

UP NEXT
The Phoenix will have a few weeks off before the regular season opens on Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. when they host UW-Stevens Point at the Kress Center.
