GREEN BAY, Wis. – After taking the first set of the night, the Green Bay volleyball team dropped three straight sets and fell to the Wright State Raiders (26-24, 19-25, 18-25, 24-26) on Friday night at the Kress Events Center.
Green Bay moved to 7-3 in Horizon League play with the loss, while the Raiders moved to 8-2.
Katie Schulz finished with 11 kills on the day to lead the Phoenix offense. Defensively, GB had two players reach double figures in digs as Emma Best finished with 17 and Kayla Birmingham had 10. From the front row, Diane Pichelman contributed five blocks and Olivia Neumann had four.
Mya Ayro led the Wright State offense with 22 kills, while Riley Zegunis was the only other Raider in double figures with 10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | The Phoenix came out on top of a tight first set, winning 26-24 in a stanza that was tied 10 times and featured five lead changes. Green Bay supplemented their offense with three aces in the opening set and got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked five Wright State attacks.
SET 2 | Green Bay dropped the second set 25-19 to even the match 1-1. The Phoenix fell behind on the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before dropping the set. Wright State led by as much as seven points late before closing it out.
SET 3 | The visitors rode that momentum from set two and took set three to grab a 2-1 lead. Wright State once again led from end-to-end, jumping ahead 8-3 early and maintaining that lead the rest of the way. The third set was the Raiders best offensive set of the night, finishing with 17 kills on a .414 attack percentage en route to the 25-18 set win.
SET 4 | Green Bay fought valiantly in the fourth, storming back from a six point deficit to eventually take a 24-23 lead. Unfortunately, the Raiders responded with three straight points to take it 26-24 and the match 3-1.
GAME NOTES
» Birmingham had a match-high three aces in the loss.
» WSU outscored GB 102-85 on the night.
» Wright State outhit Green Bay .224 to .166.
» Green Bay attackers were helped by a team-high 37 assists from Emma Johnson. Lauren Yacobucci had 45 assists for Wright State.
ON THE HORIZON
Green Bay will have a chance at revenge tomorrow afternoon when they take on Wright State again. First serve is scheduled for Noon CT.
