Koning's Career-High Not Enough as GB Falls in Four Sets at PFW

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Green Bay volleyball team fell on Saturday as the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons posted a 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 27-29, 16-25) win at the Gates Sports Center. Green Bay is now 3-2 in Horizon League play.

The Phoenix offense was paced by Gillian Koning, who finished with a career-high 21 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .370, and by Diane Pichelman, who had 19 while hitting .444. Defensively, GB had three players reach double figures in digs, including Kennedy Schmitz's 14, 14 from Emma Johnson, and 14 more from Emma Best.

PFW was led by 25 kills from Riley Rosneck, hitting .333.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | The Phoenix fell behind early, losing the first set 25-22. The two teams found themselves tied at 22 all before PFW rattled off three straight to take the set and 1-0 lead.

SET 2 | Green Bay fought back after dropping the first set to take set two by the same score, 25-22, tying the match at 1-1. The Phoenix took the set, powered by a strong performance on the attacking side. Green Bay put together a .438 attack percentage with 17 kills. After the lead changed hands five times, the Phoenix took control for good at 14-13 and rode that advantage to victory.

SET 3 | Purdue Fort Wayne responded to win set number three, putting Green Bay in a two sets to one hole. Set three was the closest of the day, with a winner not being decided without extra points. After a 25-all tie, the Mastodons scored four of the last six points to take it 29-27.

SET 4 | PFW used that third set momentum and won the fourth set handily, 25-16. The set changed after Gb had an 11-10 lead that PFW erased and then built a lead of its own after a 5-0 run. PFW would never relinquish that lead and won the fourth set thanks to a strong offensive performance, finishing with 14 kills on a .481 hitting percentage in the frame.
