Phoenix Falls in Penalty Kick Shootout in #HLMSOC Semifinal

FORT WAYNE, Ind - The Green Bay men's soccer team fell in a penalty shootout to the No. 2 seed Purdue Fort Wayne in the Horizon League Semifinal on Wednesday afternoon, 4-3. The two teams were tied at two goals apiece after 110 minutes of play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Chris Album gave Green Bay an early 1-0 lead off a penalty kick in the 10th minute after Noah Madrigal drew a foul in the Mastodons' box. Album's goal was his sixth of the season, tied for the most on the Phoenix. Shortly after, Madrigal then doubled Green Bay's lead in the 17th minute. Kazuki Okazaki found a streaking Madrigal, who beat the PFW defender to the through ball and slotted in past the keeper. That score held the remainder of the first half, with the Mastodons registering just one shot on the GB goal.

Shortly after the second half started, Purdue Fort Wayne forced a corner kick, resulting in a goal from Karsten Ternes in the 48th minute. Marco Valencia had the assist off the corner kick. Iann Topete nearly tied the match at two in the 66th minute, but Phoenix goalkeeper Drew Swancutt made a crucial save. The Mastodons did eventually tie it in the 83rd minute, forcing overtime after a Shane Anderson goal.

In overtime, each team took two shots, with the Phoenix nearly scoring its third goal in opportunities from So Nishikawa and Oscar Bjornskov, but neither found the back of the net, and the two teams entered a penalty shootout to decide who would advance to the Horizon League Championship. The Phoenix jumped ahead 2-0 in penalties, but back-to-back Phoenix misses allowed the Mastodons to regain control of the shootout, eventually taking it 4-3.

GAME NOTES
• Each team recorded 18 shots, with GB outshooting PFW 8 shots on goal to 5.
