CANCUN, Mexico – The Green Bay women's basketball team fell to Richmond Friday night at the Cancun Challenge, 76-59.
The Phoenix (5-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Jenna Guyer, who had 16 points in 19 minutes off the bench. Maddy Skorupski added 11 points and two steals, and Kamy Peppler added eight points.
The Spiders shot 52.8-percent from the floor and 43.8-percent from three point range. They had four players finish in double figures, led by 25 points from Maggie Doogan. Rachel Ullstrom scored 17 points, Alicia Newell had 13, and Ally Sweeney had 10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Richmond grabbed control of the game in the first quarter, jumping out to a 21-7 lead by quarter's end.
Green Bay traded baskets in the second quarter but were still slightly outscored in the frame, 15-13, and entered halftime down 36-20.
Richmond continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 42-22 advantage before Green Bay went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Guyer to trim its deficit to 42-28 with 6:48 to go in the third. Richmond countered and stretched its lead to 61-40 heading into the fourth.
Richmond extended its lead to 26 before Green Bay responded with another 9-0 run; however, that was as close as the Phoenix got, falling 76-59.
GAME NOTES
» The Green Bay bench made an impact by adding 29 points to its scoring output; Richmond's bench had 11.
» The Green Bay defense forced 18 turnovers, committing just 11 of their own.
» Both teams scored 26 points in the paint.

Green Bay will open Horizon League play on Thursday when they visit Northern Kentucky for a 5 p.m. CST showdown. Following, the Phoenix will return home for its HL home opener on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. CST.
