Phoenix Clinches Horizon League Championships Spot with Split Against Purdue Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Green Bay softball team is headed back to the Horizon League Championships after splitting their Saturday doubleheader against Purdue Fort Wayne. The Mastodons won game one 1-0 before GB took game two 6-1.

Green Bay finished the season 10-14 in the Horizon League and will enter the conference tournament as the No. 6 seed. The Phoenix has made the HL Championships three of the last four years.

GAME 1 | Purdue Fort Wayne 1, Green Bay 0

Game one was a pitcher's duel between Purdue Fort Wayne's Alanah Jones and Paeton Kringel.

PFW scored the lone run of the game in the third inning when Grace Hollopeter doubled down the left field line to score Tori Countryman.

The Phoenix offense had some opportunities to score but went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Kringel went six innings, giving up one run on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out three.

GAME NOTES
» Kringel limited Purdue Fort Wayne to just 1-for-10 (.100) with runners in scoring position.
» Freshman Sara Ebner led the Phoenix at the plate, going 2-for-4.
» PFW outhit GB 6-4.

GAME 2 | Green Bay 6, Purdue Fort Wayne 1

Senior Genesis Eggart was again in game two, punching out 11 Purdue Fort Wayne hitters over seven innings of work to help lead the Green Bay Phoenix past the Mastodons 6-1. She allowed just four hits while walking two.

The Phoenix got on the scoreboard in the second inning thanks to Ebner, who singled home Emma Krueger to give GB a 1-0 lead.

The Mastodons failed to push any runs across before the Phoenix built on their lead in the fifth inning. Brooke Schwall continued her strong series and doubled home Jenna Redders to make it 2-0.

Green Bay kept the offense going in the next inning, rattling off four runs in the sixth. Ebner started the scoring with a three-run homer, followed up by a Redders' double that scored Kendal Herschbach to give GB a 6-0 lead.

PFW attempted a comeback in the sixth but could only put one run on the board before Eggart shut down the Mastodons' threat.

GAME NOTES
» Green Bay got three-hit games from both Ebner and Krueger.
» Redders picked up two extra-base hits in the ballgame.
» Ebner drove in four runs for Green Bay.
» Four Phoenix had multiple hits in the ballgame.
» The Phoenix outhit the Mastodons at a 12-4 clip.
» Green Bay went 6-for-12 (.500) with runners in scoring position.
» Eggart limited Purdue Fort Wayne to just 1-for-7 (.143) with runners in scoring position.
» Ebner led the Phoenix at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI.

HORIZON LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS

As the No. 6 seed, Green Bay will take on the No. 3-seeded IU Indy Jaguars in the Horizon League Championships First Round. The tournament will be hosted by Cleveland State, and the two teams will square off on Wednesday, May 7 at 1:30 p.m.
