Vermillion, S.D. – On Thursday evening, the Green Bay volleyball team fell in three sets (19-25, 17-25, 16-25) to the South Dakota Coyotes at Sanford Coyote Sports Center in Vermillion. The Phoenix is hoping to bounce back tomorrow when they face #17 Kansas.
Diane Pichelman led the Phoenix with 7 kills, hitting.250, while Katie Schulz finished with 5 kills. GB got 12digs from Emma Best, along with six blocks from Olivia Neumann, to lead them defensively. Emma Johnson finished the day with 10 assists.
South Dakota was led by a 13-kill performance from Lauren Medeck.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | The Phoenix found themselves in an early deficit, dropping the first set 25-19. South Dakota jumped out to an 11-4 lead before GB responded with a 4-0 run capped off by a kill and a block from
Diane Pichelman. Unfortunately for Green Bay, South Dakota bounced back and finished the opening set ahead of them.
SET 2 | The second set was a battle until the Coyotes were able to pull ahead and close out the set 25-17, taking a 2-0 lead. GB kept it close until 11-11 when South Dakota rattled off a 7-1 run to take an 18-12 lead. GB kept fighting the whole set but fell short in the end.
SET 3 | Green Bay fell down 2-9 to start the third set, but was able to pull the game to within two points at 10-12. South Dakota slowly pulled ahead by going on multiple serving runs and keeping the game just out of reach for the Phoenix, losing 16-25 in the third set.
GAME NOTES
» Neumann had a team-high six blocks in the loss.
» Green Bay's best attacking set was the first, when they finished with 10 kills on a .167 hitting percentage.
» South Dakota outscored GB 75-52 across the three sets.
COMING UP
GB has two more matchups this weekend in the Coyote Invitational against the Kansas Jayhawks on Sept. 12 at 4 p.m. before facing Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. Next weekend, the Phoenix is heading home to host Kendall's Battle at the Capital Credit Union Classic at the Kress Center on September 18-20.
