EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Green Bay men's tennis team
continued its strong fall play by winning two of its three team matches in
singles action at the Stan Drobac Invitational hosted by Michigan State. The
Phoenix defeated both IUPUI (6-0) and UIC (3-2) before falling to the host
Spartans (7-0).
Mat Nelson (Grandville, Mich.) was a two-time winner, picking
up a straight-sets win over Nick Folz (IUPUI) by a 6-3, 7-5 count and coming
back for a 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 10-7 victory over UIC's Bastian Harbo. Nelson also
had the best effort against the Spartans, reaching a third set against MSU's
Austin Brooks (1-6, 6-4, 6-10).
Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) also won a pair of matches
for the Phoenix. He won a 6-0, 5-7, 10-8 thriller over IUPUI's Deon Shafer and
dropped UIC's Sebastian Lystad by a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) final.
Matt Clegg (Stevens Point, Wis.) was Green Bay's other
multi-time winner. He claimed a pair of straight-set wins, taking down IUPUI's
Joel Modesitt 7-5, 6-2 before dumping UIC's Scott Shepardson by a 6-1, 6-0
score.
The Phoenix completes action in the tournament Sunday.
