GREEN BAY, Wis. - The
Green Bay women's basketball team opened up their 2009-10 exhibition season
with a solid 78-47 win over St. Norbert Saturday.
"I liked our confidence offensively from the start; we were
really focused on working inside. We've been having very consistent practices
and that showed today," said head coach Matt Bollant.
With eight new players on the Phoenix roster Green Bay got
off to a fast start holding St. Norbert to just nine points with less than nine
minutes to play in the first half. On the offensive side of the ball, Green Bay
shot 48% in the first half and made 80% of their free throws.
Sophomore Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) is one of four new
faces in this year's starting line-up and proved today why she will be a great
asset to the Phoenix this season. Wojta scored a game high 19 points in 25
minutes of play and was one of four players to lead Green Bay with five
rebounds.
"Julie I thought was really good at the five considering we
just put her in that position about a week and a half ago. She's going to be
huge to our success," said Bollant.
Wojta is most familiar with the guard position and occasionally
only played post in high school because she was the biggest girl on the team.
Now that Wojta is starting to adjust to her new role she is getting more
comfortable with it every day, "I was surprised coach put me in that position;
I have little things to work on with my foot work but Kayla has helped me a lot,"
said Wojta.
Freshman Breannah Ranger (Skokie, Ill.) scored an impressive
11 points and grabbed five rebounds in just 12 minutes of action while guard
Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) chipped in 10 points. Green Bay finished
the game making 80% of their free throws while shooting 47% from the field and
was 8-23 from three-point range.
St. Norbert was led in scoring by Denise Heuser with 14
points while Stefanie Bunday chipped in eight.
Green Bay will wrap up exhibition play Saturday, Nov. 7 as
they host UW-Parkside at noon at the Kress Center.
