A pair of Green Bay men's tennis players took home postseason honors from the Horizon League Friday, as junior Matt Clegg (Stevens Point, Wis.) and freshman Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) were both named to the all-league's second team.
The postseason honors were voted upon by the head coaches of Horizon League member institutions.
Clegg played No. 1 singles and both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles on the year. In singles action, Clegg was 4-3 in Horizon League play and 9-9 overall. As a doubles player, Clegg posted a 10-8 record overall and an impressive 5-2 mark in Horizon League matches.
Swanson had an impact for the Phoenix in his first season, playing a majority of his singles matches at No. 2, where he posted a 12-6 record overall and a 4-3 mark against Horizon League foes. In doubles competition, Swanson was 7-7 overall and 2-2 in league action.
Detroit newcomer Pjotrs Necajavs took home both Player and Newcomer of the Year honors, while Brian Etzkin of Cleveland State was named Coach of the Year. Earning the Herb Foster Sportsmanship Award was Steven Wipprecht, also of Cleveland State.
After beating Wright State 4-1 in the opening round of the 2009 Horizon League Championships, the No. 4 seeded Phoenix will face top-seeded Cleveland State Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
