PENDLETON, Ind. - The Green Bay softball team fell to regular-season champion UIC, 7-4, in the quarterfinal round of the Horizon League Championship Thursday afternoon. The seventh-seeded Phoenix had advanced to the game after defeating No. 6 Valparaiso by an identical score on Thursday morning.
Green Bay will now play No. 9 seed Detroit in an elimination game Friday morning at 10 a.m. (CT). The winner of that game will advance to a Friday evening game against an opponent yet to be determined. The championship is a true double-elimination format.
Green Bay (19-24) and UIC (25-24) were knotted at 3 following three innings of play, but the Flames broke through for four in the fourth to take control. Amanda Margelofsky (Oakfield, Wis.) was saddled with the loss to drop to 10-8, after yielding seven runs, six earned, in four innings.
Catcher Missy Schleicher (Waupun, Wis.) continued her big day, as she homered for the second time in as many games. To start her morning, she was named to the Academic All-District V Second Team and then blasted a dinger against Valpo. Schleicher's second-inning solo shot against UIC clanged off the left-field foul pole to give Green Bay a 1-0 lead.
The Phoenix lead was short-lived, however, as UIC scored three in the bottom of that frame. The Phoenix evened the score in the top of the third after Krissy Hanson (Arcadia, Wis.) doubled home Melani Niederer (New Munster, Wis.). Hanson later scored on a Schleicher fielder's choice ground ball.
Green Bay committed five errors on the day, including two during the Flames' four-run spurt in the fourth. The final Phoenix tally came in the seventh, when Mollie Kaebisch (Colgate, Wis.) launched a home run to center.
