PENDLETON, Ind. - The Green Bay Phoenix softball team (20-25) saw its season come to a close Friday evening by virtue of a 2-0 loss to Butler (25-27) at the 2009 Horizon League Championship. The Bulldogs went 4-0 against the Phoenix this year, as Green Bay mustered just one run in the four meetings.
Amanda Margelofsky (Oakfield, Wis.) suffered the tough-luck loss, allowing two runs on eight hits over six innings. She walked three and struck out one.
The Phoenix managed only four hits on the evening off Butler pitcher Breanna Fisher, who allowed just five Phoenix players to reach base. She notched five strikeouts on the day as well. Green Bay had averaged 6.8 runs per contest over its previous six games.
Butler's first-inning run, which came courtesy of some small ball following a leadoff single, was enough to stand up. The RBI came on a fielder's choice grounder when Butler's Alex Boros slid under the tag at home. The Bulldogs tacked on an insurance run in the fifth courtesy of a bases-loaded walk.
Sara Junion (Egg Harbor, Wis.) had two of the Green Bay hits, including the lone extra-base rap, a double in the fourth. Green Bay's best threat came after the Junion double, but the Phoenix was not able to get a two-out hit with runners on second and third.
