PENDLETON, Ind. - The Green Bay softball team logged an 8-5 victory over Detroit Friday afternoon in the consolation bracket of the Horizon League Softball Championship at Legends Field. The win keeps the seventh-seeded Phoenix (20-24) alive in the tournament and earns the squad a showdown with fifth-seeded Butler Friday at 5 p.m. (CT).
Green Bay continued its scoring surge of late, as the team has now totaled 41 runs over its last six games, an average of 6.8 per contest.
The Phoenix erased an early 2-0 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and three more in the second. Ashley Billerbeck's (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) two-run home run to right field with one down in the second gave Green Bay the lead for good.
Missy Schleicher (Waupun, Wis.) continued her hot hitting, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Melani Niederer (New Munster, Wis.) scored three times, while Krissy Hanson (Arcadia, Wis.) knocked in a pair.
Katie Cooney (East Moline, Ill.) picked up her second victory in as many days to move to 6-10. She scattered five runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings with six strikeouts. Amanda Margelofsky (Oakfield, Wis.) pitched the final 1 2/3 to secure the win.
Detroit (7-42) committed five errors, while Green Bay did not have a defensive miscue. Four of Green Bay's eight runs were unearned.
The winner of the Green Bay-Butler game will play at 8 a.m. Saturday against either Loyola or Valparaiso. The loser will be eliminated.
