Green Bay Picked to Win 13th Horizon League Title, Tetschlag Selected as POY

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay women's basketball team is predicted to win its 13th consecutive regular season Horizon League title, according to the league's preseason poll released today. Green Bay collected 26 of a possible 27 first-place votes. The votes are tallied from league coaches, sports information directors and media members.

"We're expected to do well every year so we don't get wrapped up in the preseason rankings," said head coach Matt Bollant. "The Green Bay way is about seeking excellence and we try to focus on that each day."

Three members of the Green Bay squad were selected to the All-League First Team as Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) was chosen as Player of the Year. Teammates Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) and Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) were the other top two vote getters chosen as First Team selections.

Tetschlag received 22 of 26 Player-of-the-Year votes. Last season, Tetschlag was a First Team All-League selection and a three-time Player of the Week selection. Tetschlag poured in a career-high 29 points in the second round of the NCAA Tournament shooting 10-13 from the field and 4-5 from behind the arc against Iowa State. A league All-Tournament Team selection, Tetschlag also was among league leaders in field goal percentage (2nd), free throw percentage (6th) and defensive rebounds (7th).

"I'm really honored to receive this award but I think the best reward of all is that our team got picked first in the conference," said Tetschlag. "It's an honor to have the top three vote-getters on our team so I was more excited about that."

Last season Hoewisch finished the season ranked third in the league in steals (2.5 spg) and was also a First Team selection and All-Defensive Team selection. Wojta ranked fourth in the league in free throw percentage (.829) and was a Second Team selection. Both Hoewisch and Wojta received Player of the Week honors throughout the season for their performances.

Joining Tetschlag, Wojta and Hoewisch on the First Team are Shawnita Garland from Cleveland State and Jasmine Bailey from UIC.

With the nation's longest active streak for regular season titles (12), Green Bay returns all five starters from last year's squad. The Phoenix finished the season with a program and league-best 35 consecutive-game win streak.

The Phoenix opens the 2010-11 season with exhibition play on Oct. 30 as it hosts Winona State at 4 p.m. Green Bay tips off regular season play Nov. 13 at the Best Buy Classic in Minneapolis. The Phoenix will host Wisconsin in its home-opener on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.
