GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The No. 2 seeded Green Bay (12-4-0, 6-2-0
HL) men's soccer team will face No. 3 seed Loyola (5-10-2, 4-3-1 HL) in the
second round of the Horizon League Championship on Friday at 11 a.m. at the
Butler Bowl in Indianapolis, Ind.
On Tuesday, the
Ramblers beat No. 6 seed Milwaukee (6-10-3, 4-4-0 HL) 3-0 in the first round,
advancing to Friday's second round hosted by No. 1 seed Butler.
Friday's game will be
the second meeting between these two teams in less than two weeks. Green Bay
came from behind to beat the Ramblers 2-1 in overtime on Oct. 30 at Aldo
Santaga Stadium. First Team All-League selection Tony Walls (Wauwatosa, Wis.) scored both goals for the Phoenix,
keeping its winning streak going.
Green Bay is 1-1-0 facing Loyola in the league championship. In 2006, the
Phoenix fell 1-0 to the Ramblers in the championship game in Chicago. In 2007,
both teams met in the senifinal round where the Phoenix came away with a 1-0 win to
advance to the championship game.
Winning
Streak: Green Bay is currently on an eight-game winning
streak, the third longest in school history and longest since 1992. With a win
over the Ramblers, Green Bay would tie the second longest active streak in
school history. In addition, the streak is the longest under seventh- year head
coach Tom Poitras.
Offensive Power Ranking:
During the streak,
Green Bay has outscored its opponents 20-6 with a shot-on-goal percentage of
.460. The Phoenix ranks 13th in the country in scoring offense and 17th in total
goals (35) and won-lost-tied percentage (0.73). In addition, Green Bay currently ranks eighth in the Great Lakes Region Poll.
Banks in the Ranks: First Team All-League selection JC Banks (Milwaukee, Wis.) leads the
Horizon League in goals (12), points (29) and shots (78). Banks also ranks in
the nation's top 10 in four of six offensive statistical categories. Banks is 7th
in goals per game (0.75) and 8th in points per game (1.81), total points (29)
and total goals (12).
