MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The
Green Bay (1-0) women's basketball team tipped off its 2010-11 season with a
solid 75-51 win over George Washington (0-1) in the first round of the Best Buy
Classic in Minneapolis, Minn.
"It's a great way for us to start our season, especially
against an athletic team like George Washington," said head coach Matt Bollant
who is 4-0 in season openers. "I'm real proud of the way our players came out and
were ready to play."
Five players scored in double figures for the Phoenix
including sophomore Adrian Ritchie (De Pere, Wis.) who made her first
collegiate start in style, pouring in a career high 24 points while playing a
career high 40 minutes to lead players.
"I felt really good and was just trying to help my team out
in any way I could," said Ritchie.
The Phoenix started the game with a 7-0 run before George Washington
put its first points on the board from the free throw line at the 15:16 mark. The
Colonials were able to slow down the Phoenix holding it scoreless for almost
four minutes late in the half.
However Green Bay got its spark back from the shooting of
Adrian Ritchie (De Pere, Wis.) who tied her career-high 14 points in the first
half. After the Colonials cut Green Bay's lead to three with 3:36 to play in
the half, Ritchie knocked down a three pointer from the top of the key with 2:38
to play.
After the Phoenix forced George Washington's 11th turnover
of the half with less than 30 seconds to play, Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville,
Wis.) made a flashy drive to the hoop giving the Phoenix its largest lead of
the half, 35-23, as time expired. Green Bay closed out the half with an 8-0
run.
The Phoenix outrebounded GW 21-19 while scoring 11 points
off offensive boards and shooting 41.9 percent from the field in the first 20
minutes of play.
Green Bay started the second half with three turnovers
allowing George Washington to come within 11 off a three pointer by Megan Nipe.
That's as close as the Colonials would come to the Phoenix who led by as many
as 27 with just over two minutes to play in the game.
Dominant in the paint, Green Bay scored 42 points down low
as Stephanie Sension (Hopkins, Minn.) had a career high 11 points in front of
her home crowd. Sarah Eichler (Grafton, Wis.) also had 11 while Celeste
Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) added 13 and Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.)
chipped in 10.
Green Bay shot 46.8 percent from the field and 61.1 percent
from the free throw line while GW shot 27.8 percent from the field and 80 percent
from the line.
