February 20, 2010 - The
game the Green Bay (22-3, 11-3) women's basketball team had been waiting for
since Jan. 22 finally came as Loyola (13-13, 7-8) entered the Kress Center and
left with a loss, much like Green Bay did when they traveled to Loyola.
Entering today's game with their third different starting
line-up of the season, Green Bay had not forgotten how their record 16-game
winning streak came to an end, "we hoped this was a game our kids were looking
forward to since they (Loyola) beat us and the improvements we've made since
then have shown that," said head coach Matt Bollant.
Though Loyola cut the Phoenix lead to three early in the
contest, Green Bay's defensive intensity was a consistent threat to the
Ramblers forcing 17 turnovers in the first half of play in exchange for 25
points, "I thought our defense really carried us today and I thought we really
executed the game plan and what we were trying to do," said Bollant.
During a span of four minutes in the middle of the first
half, Green Bay went on an 11-0 run in which Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.)
scored nine of her 11 first half points. Though Loyola shot 58 percent in the
first half compared to Green Bay's 51, the Phoenix led 41-25 at the break with
Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) adding 11 points.
Green Bay's momentum carried them into the second half as
the Phoenix led by as many as 33, "I think this is the first time we've had two
halves that we really strung together and I think it started with our defense
in the first half," said Bollant.
Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) led all scorers with 16
shooting her season best 4-4 from three-point range, "Celeste's ability to
knock down shots has really given us a lift offensively," said Bollant. Wojta
finished with 15 and tied a career-high eight assists while Tetschlag finished
with 13 as Heather Golden (De Pere, Wis.) chipped in ten.
With Detroit's 67-49 win over Valparaiso and Butler's 51-48
overtime win at Wright State, Green Bay's final road trip of the season is crucial.
Green Bay and Butler are tied for second place in the Horizon League standings,
one half games behind first place Detroit.
Green Bay will travel to Valparaiso Thursday, Feb. 25
followed by Butler on Saturday. The Phoenix has not won back to back road games
since Jan. 2 and 4.
