DETROIT, Mich - The Green Bay softball team completed their three-game sweep of conference foe Detroit with a 13-2 victory in five innings. The Phoenix (17-8, 3-2) tallied all 13 runs in the first three innings to build a lead which would not be relinquished.
With two outs in the first inning, the Phoenix strung together three straight hits, the last of which being a three-run home run by Danielle Peerenboom (Appleton, Wis.) to give Green Bay a 4-0 lead. The homer was Peerenboom's fourth on the season, and the freshman would make her presence known again.
After the first five batters in the top half of the second reached base for the Phoenix, and a two-run single by Krissy Hanson (Arcadia, Wis.) and a run-scoring double by Sara Junion (Egg Harbor, Wis.) extended the lead for the Phoenix, Peerenboom blasted her second home-run of the game for her first career multi-home run effort. In total, Green Bay sent nine batters to the plate in the second frame scoring six runs to build a 10-0 lead over the Titans (2-21, 0-12).
Tieraney Planasch (Juneau, Wis.) took the mound for the Phoenix and allowed just three hits over all five innings. The performance was her third complete game on the season and good enough for her second victory.
Over the three-game series with Detroit, Green Bay smashed 39 hits and scored 34 runs. The Phoenix slugged six home runs by four different players to improve their conference record above .500 for the first time this season.
Green Bay returns to action for a six-game homestand which starts Wednesday with a doubleheader date against Loyola. Start time is 2 p.m. at Ben Garot Field.
