Bay women's basketball juniors Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) and Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) have been named to the Division I-AAA Women's
Scholar-Athlete Team.
This is the 8th year the Division I-AAA Athletics
Directors Association has presented Scholar-Athlete Teams in men and women's
basketball. Two 10-member squads are selected for each gender as well as an
overall male and female "Scholar-Athlete of the Year."
Tetschlag finished the season as a First Team All-League
selection and three-time Horizon League Player of the Week. She finished the
season ranked 16th in the country in field-goal percentage (55.9)
while leading the Phoenix in scoring (15.2 ppg), rebounding (6.5 bpg) and
blocks (24). Tetschlag had one of her career best performances in the second
round of the NCAA tournament against Iowa State as she scored a game and career
high 29 points going 10-13 from the field, 4-5 from three-point range while
grabbing six boards and shooting 100% (5-5) from the free-throw line. Kayla's
29 points tied the NCAA tournament record for Green Bay.
In the classroom Tetschlag maintains a 3.78 grade-point
average and is majoring in Business Administration. This season Tetschlag was
the only player from the Horizon League named to the first team Academic
All-District Team presented by ESPN The Magazine and CoSIDA. Her efforts in the
classroom also earned her a spot on the Fall Horizon League Academic Honor Roll
as well as a U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Month for December.
Hoewisch finished the season joining Tetschlag on the First
Team All-League and was also named to the All-Defensive Team while garnering
Horizon League Player of the Week honors Feb. 15. Hoewisch finished the season
with a team and career-high 81 steals averaging 2.5 picks per game. The 5-7
guard led the Phoenix with 132 assists starting every contest while moving up
to number four on the individual season record list for free throws made (131)
and attempted (163). Hoewisch had her career-best performance in the first
round of the NCAA tournament game against Virginia where she led the Phoenix
with 23 points while grabbing five boards and four steals. In addition,
Hoewisch set a Green Bay individual game record in the NCAA tournament for free
throws made (13) and attempted (15).
In the classroom Hoewisch maintains a 3.3 grade point
average and was named to the Fall Horizon League Academic Honor Roll. Hoewisch
is majoring in Human Biology with an emphasis in health science.
Green Bay is the only school to have two players on the
Scholar-Athlete team and the only team in the state to be represented.
Criteria are based on the nominee being a starter or
important reserve with legitimate athletics credentials and at least a 3.2
cumulative grade point average. The student-athlete much have reached junior
academic standing and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games.
