CHICAGO, Ill. (April,
22) - The Green Bay (19-15, 5-9) softball team was swept by UIC (14-29, 7-6)
in a three-game series after losing 2-5 this afternoon. The series is part of a
six game road stretch for the Phoenix.
In the second inning Kendra Woepse (Manitowoc, Wis.) hit an
RBI single to second base scoring Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) giving Green Bay
the 1-0 lead.
The Flames took the lead with one out in the bottom of the
fourth when Ashley Hewett hit a two-run homer to right center field. UIC added
another run off a Green Bay error to boost its lead 3-1.
Green Bay got the bats rolling in the fifth with three hits
but stranded three runners on base before UIC led off with a solo homerun to
right field boosting the Flames lead to 4-1. UIC added one more run off a
fielder's choice before the inning came to an end.
Senior Melanie Niederer (New Munster, Wis.) led off the
seventh inning with her second career triple before Katie Cooney (East Moline,
Ill.) grounded out to shortstop scoring Niederer to make it 2-5. Rivera struck
out swinging as the Phoenix ended the game with two runs off eight hits and
losing its sixth straight.
Lauren Beres (New Berlin, Wis.) falls to 7-4 on the season
after allowing four runs in four innings. Woepse led the Phoenix from behind the
plate with two hits and one RBI off three at-bats.
Green Bay will wrap up its road trip with three games at
Wright State (18-23-1, 9-6) beginning with a double-header Saturday at noon.
