Green Bay Wins in Bottom of Seventh to Keep Season Alive

CLEVELAND, Ohio - For the fourth time in nine days the Green Bay (27-19) softball team beat No. 6 seed Butler (36-19). This time Butler season comes to an end as the No. 5 seed Phoenix keep rolling in the Horizon League Championship.

The Phoenix scored first with two outs in the bottom of the third when Krissy Hanson (Arcadia, Wis.) hit an RBI single to shortstop scoring Melani Niederer (New Munster, Wis.) making it 1-0 off two hits with two runners left on base at the close of the inning.

After two scoreless innings and one out in the bottom of the sixth, Butler hit a two-run triple to right field, taking the 2-1 lead from the Phoenix.

In the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs and a full count, Niederer and Jenna Nitti (Green Bay, Wis.) on base, Katie Cooney (East Moline, Ill.) reached base on an error by the shortstop scoring two unearned runs to give the Phoenix the 3-2 win.

Cooney (12-10) earned the win on the mound pitching her second complete game while allowing two runs off four hits while striking out nine batters.

Green Bay's season continues in the double-elimination tournament, as it will face Valparaiso this afternoon at 4:30. The Crusaders shutout the Phoenix 4-0 in game one on Thursday.
