GREEN BAY, Wis. - The
Green Bay (24-18, 9-11) softball team swept Butler (35-17, 11-11) in a
three-game series which concluded today with a 4-2 win thanks to a grand slam
by Sara Junion (Sevastopol, Wis.) in the bottom of the second inning.
Both of Butler's errors came in the second inning allowing
Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) and Krissy Hanson (Arcadia, Wis.) to reach base.
Jenna Nitti (Green Bay, Wis.) loaded the bases on a walk before Junion hit a grand
slam to left center field, putting Green Bay's four runs on the board. Junion's
run also set an individual season record for runs scored (36).
In the top of the third with a runner on third base, Butler
hit an RBI single up the middle to put the Bulldogs on the board. Butler tried
to rally in the top of the seventh but was only able to add one run on a
fielder's choice.
For the third straight game Katie Cooney (East Moline, Ill.)
pitched a complete game allowing five hits while striking out six. Cooney
improves to 10-9 on the season.
The Phoenix, which now sits in sixth place ahead of Loyola (7-12), would clinch a berth in the six-team Horizon League
tournament by winning two of its three games against
Youngstown State (6-15) this weekend. A three-game sweep would give Green Bay the No. 5 seed.
First pitch of a three-game series against the Penguins is
scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ben Garot Field.
