MILWAUKEE, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's tennis team opened its spring
season over the weekend by splitting a pair of matches away from home. The
Phoenix defeated IUPUI 7-0 on Sunday in Milwaukee after falling to Dartmouth
6-1 on Saturday in Chicago.
Sophomore
Erik Finkenbrink (Duelman, Germany)
had a strong weekend for Green Bay, picking up a pair of wins at No. 1 singles.
Finkenbrink defeated Dartmouth's Michael Laser 6-3, 6-3 on Saturday for Green
Bay's lone singles win, and then beat IUPUI's Nick Volz 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday.
"Erik
Finkenbrink was tremendous on Saturday against Dartmouth," Phoenix head coach Mark Thomas said. "We played a very
good team and lost the momentum after having chances to secure the doubles
point, which led to several poor first sets in the singles matches."
Sophomore
Craig Cox (Surrey, England) and
senior Fabian Gogolin (Cologne,
Germany) earned a win in No. 2 doubles against Dartmouth, defeating Laser and
Xander Centenari 8-4.
In
Sunday's 7-0 sweep of IUPUI, Cox and Gogolin paired up to win the No. 1 doubles
match, beating Joe Hammond and Bren Vasalakis 8-2. Cox also won his No. 3
singles match 6-3, 6-2, while Gogolin won at No. 5 singles 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Junior
Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.)
picked up a victory at No. 2 singles, defeating Ivan Mojsejev 6-1, 6-2.
"The
guys competed well and played great on Sunday," Thomas said. "Cox and Gogolin
played great doubles all weekend and set the tone for the team to secure the
doubles point. The guys continued the momentum into singles, and Paul Swanson
picked up his level a notch which was great to see. IUPUI fought hard, and this
was a good win for our program."
Green Bay is next in action on Saturday, Feb. 12
when it travels to DeKalb, Ill., to take on Western Illinois.
