COLUMBUS,
Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The
Green Bay men's tennis team wrapped up day two of the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association (ITA) Midwest Regional on Friday at The Ohio State University.
Three Phoenix men participated in the main singles draw, which featured 64 of
the Midwest's top players from 21 Division I schools, while doubles play also
got underway.
Freshmen Felix Goepper (Seelbach, Germany) and Michael
Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) made their way into the main draw by posting 3-0
records in the qualifying bracket. Goepper cruised past Western Michigan's Ross
Vanderploeg 6-3, 6-1 Friday morning to earn one of the eight available spots,
while Tenzer came from behind for the second straight match to beat Notre
Dame's Spencer Talmadge 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Senior Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.), who earned an automatic berth into the main
draw, dropped his lone singles match on Friday to 11th-seeded Greg Andrews of
Notre Dame (6-3, 6-3). Goepper and Tenzer also lost in their first round
matches, with Goepper falling to Notre Dame's Billy Pecor (1-6, 6-3, 7-5) and
Tenzer losing to Northwestern's Spencer Wolf (7-6, 6-3).
Play will resume Saturday morning at 7 a.m. CT at the
Varsity Tennis Center and Jesse Owens West Tennis Center.
