TULSA, Okla.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - After falling behind 2-0 in the first half, the Green Bay (5-5-1, 1-2-0) men's
soccer team came from behind scoring two goals in three minutes in the second
half, helping it beat Tulsa (4-7-0, 0-2-0) 3-2 at Hurricane Stadium Saturday.
Both teams entered the contest coming off three-consecutive losses, looking for
a much needed win.
"It was an unbelievable comeback for our team and I couldn't
be more proud of our guys," said head coach Kris Kelderman. "We said at half that
team's true colors show when they are down and tonight we found out what we are
made of."
Tulsa scored both of its goals in less than eight minutes
late in the first half, taking a comfortable 2-0 lead into the second half.
The Hurricane outshot the Phoenix 11-9 and 3-0 on corner
kicks in the first half while goalie Ryan Wehking (St. Louis, Mo.) made one
save.
Green Bay attacked early in the second half, looking to
overcome a 2-0 deficit. Ten minutes into the half sophomore Sebastian Xiong
(Cottage Grove, Wis.) put the Phoenix on the board, scoring his first career
goal from 20 yards out on the left side of the box.
"Sebastian stepped up when he got the opportunity and has
been doing a great job of giving us minutes when needed," said Kelderman.
Less than three minutes after Xiong's goal, freshman Kirby
Allen (Appleton, Wis.) netted his third goal of the season to knot the game
2-2. Senior Stuart Grable (Neenah, Wis.) found Allen on the doorstep of the
goal, tallying his team-high fourth assist of the season.
Green Bay took the lead for good with less than seven minutes
to play when freshman AJ Patterson (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) scored from the
lower left corner outside the box to give the Phoenix the 3-2 advantage. The
ball was served in play on a corner kick by Grable and volleyed off two Tulsa
players before Patterson netted the first goal of his collegiate career.
"We knew preseason
it would take time for AJ to get going after coming into the season off injury,"
Kelderman said of Patterson's performance.
The Phoenix defense prevailed, not allowing the Hurricane a
corner kick in the second half, holding on for the 3-2 win and snapping its
three-game losing streak.
Green Bay finished the game outshooting Tulsa 18-16 and 4-3
on corner kicks. Allen led the Phoenix with four shots, two on goal, while
Grable led all players with two assists as Wehking had four saves in the win.
"Stuart has been solid for us all season. We have asked him
to play different positions and he continues to prove his versatility,"
Kelderman said.
The Phoenix battled adversity as it was playing without three
of its starters due to injury, illness and cautions. Freshman Sam Ramirez (De
Forest, Wis.) played a career high 90 minutes, making his first collegiate
start.
Home Sweet Home: The Phoenix is looking forward to returning
home Saturday, Oct. 15 to battle Horizon League rival Butler at 7 p.m. at Aldo
Santaga Stadium. Green Bay will host in-state rival Wisconsin Wednesday, Oct.
19 at 7 p.m.
