Phoenix Opens Season in Exciting Fashion Despite Coming up Short

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay (0-2) softball team kicked off its 2011 campaign with a pair of losses in the UNI Dome Tournament Feb. 12 at Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Phoenix dropped its first game 10-1 against North Dakota (1-2) before being edged 8-7 by host UNI (3-0) in its second game of the tournament.

In its first game against North Dakota, the Fighting Sioux jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first before Green Bay's Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) hit an RBI double to right center field scoring Danielle Peerenboom (Appleton, Wis.) to knot the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third.

North Dakota tacked on another run in the fifth inning with an RBI double to right center field to take the 2-1 lead for good. The Fighting Sioux added eight runs off five hits in the sixth inning to end the game.

Rivera finished the first game with three hits off three at-bats and one rbi to lead the Phoenix.

In its second game of the day against UNI, Green Bay came two runs shy of beating the Panthers by a final of 8-7. UNI scored two runs off one hit in the second inning before the Phoenix took the 3-2 lead in the fourth thanks to an rbi double from Paige Newtols (Green Bay, Wis.) and rbi single by Rivera.

The Panthers regained the 5-3 lead in the fifth scoring three runs off five hits. In the top of the sixth Newtols hit a double and batted three runners in as Green Bay scored three runs off two hits to lead 6-5. UNI answered at the bottom of the inning with an rbi double to knot the game 6-6.

In the top of the seventh Green Bay scored one run off two hits while stranding two runners on base before heading into the bottom of the seventh with the 7-6 lead. In the bottom of the seventh the Panthers hit a two-run homer to seal the 8-7 victory over the Phoenix.

Senior pitcher Katie Cooney (East Moline, Ill.) pitched six innings while allowing 14 hits and striking out six batters in Green Bay's loss against the Panthers.

The Phoenix faces South Dakota Sunday, Feb. 13 at 4p.m. to wrap up the UNI Dome Tournament.
