GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The No. 17/13 Green Bay (27-1, 16-0 HL)
women's basketball team dominated Butler (17-12, 11-6 HL) with its inside game
en route to a 93-57 win in front of a sold-out crowd of 4,018 at the Kress
Events Center Saturday in its home court, regular-season finale. Green Bay's 27
wins are the most during a regular season in program history. The 93 points were
a season-high by the Phoenix in its best offensive performance of the year.
"I can't remember a better offensive
performance," said head coach Matt Bollant. "We took advantage of what they
gave us and really worked the ball inside well."
Green Bay jumped out to an early 6-3 lead
before Butler's Devin Brierly drained a three-pointer to tie it 8-8 at the
14:38 mark. The contest was tied three times throughout the first eight minutes
of play before Green Bay opened up a 15-4 run sparked by a Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.)
jumper with 11:21 remaining in the half.
"We struggled in the beginning of the year
putting teams away but we've gotten better since we played them (Butler) last,"
said Tetschlag. "We were in more control today and just played inspired
basketball."
With four minutes remaining in the first
half, Tetschlag had scored 14 points throughout 15 minutes of play before
finishing with 16 in the half to lead all players. Green Bay led 41-23 at the
break scoring 28 points in the paint while shooting 58 percent from the field,
its second-highest of the season in first half action.
The Phoenix continued its dominance in the
paint throughout the second half as Tetschlag and Julie Wojta (Mishicot, Wis.) combined for eight points throughout
the first four minutes as Green Bay shot a perfect 100 percent from the field
and the free-throw line, sinking 4-of-4 from each. "Kayla and Julie made it
look easy the way they played inside with our offense."
While building its lead to as many as 42
with 3:13 to play, Wojta led all players scoring 13 points throughout 14
minutes of play throughout the second half before finishing with 19. Green Bay
finished the half shooting an impressive season-high 70 percent from the field.
"We had a lot of players step up today and
make shots and big plays," Bollant said. "We just did a lot of things right
offensively today."
For the ninth time this season, four
players scored in double figures for the Phoenix as Tetschlag led the way with
a game-high 20 in addition to Wojta's 19. Sophomore Adrian Ritchie (De Pere, Wis.) added 12 and Lydia Bauer (Lake Zurich, Ill.) 10,
both entering the game off the bench. Ritchie also dished out a career-high
eight assists and had three steals throughout 21 minutes of play, "I felt so
good today not having to tape my ankle or think about it, I just felt like
myself."
Green Bay finished the contest scoring a
season-high 93 points, sinking 34 of its 53 field-goal attempts. The 34 made
field goals tied the Kress Center record while shooting a season-high 64-percent
from the field. Its 36-point margin of victory was Green Bay's largest over
Butler under the leadership of Bollant and the fourth time the Phoenix has
beaten the Bulldogs by 36 or more points.
The Phoenix will wrap up its
regular-season on the road when it travels to Wright State (17-9, 10-5 HL)
Thursday, March 3 followed by Detroit (11-15, 5-10 HL) Saturday, March 5. Green
Bay will host a quarterfinal game of the 2011 Horizon League Championship at the Kress
Events Center on Wednesday, March 9 at 7 p.m. With a victory that evening, Green Bay would then host the remainder of the championship with semifinals on Friday, March 11 and the championship game on Sunday, March 13.
PinkZone Frenzy... Saturday was Green Bay's annual PinkZone game in honor of
cancer awareness. Throughout the month of February during the Coaches vs.
Cancer and Saturday's PinkZone events, $21,961.19 has been raised for the
Patient Assistance Fund at the Bellin Health Foundation in conjunction with
Broadway Automotive.
Following Friday's practice the team met with seven-year-old
Amelia Gorton who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of two. Gorton and her
friend Savannah joined the Phoenix on the bench for Saturday's PinkZone game. "Amelia
really puts into perspective what this game is all about," Tetschlag said. "Coach
Leonhard reminded us that it's not just about the pink shoes, it's about the
people who are fighting and I'm so glad Amelia got to join us on the bench
today."
Farewell to the
Class of 2011... Seniors Heather Golden (De
Pere, Wis.), Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) and Kayla Tetschlag
(Sheboygan, Wis.) bid farewell and thanks to the fans for their support
throughout the years. Hoewisch told the fans, her career and this season have
been awesome, and they're not done yet. "It was such a special day," said
Tetschlag. "This hasn't just been special and fun because of the success we've
had but also because of the relationships we've built."
"As a coach, this is what you dream about
on senior day," said Bollant. "We played a good rival with our great seniors in
front of a packed gym. It was such a special day."
Record
Day, the Phoenix Way... In
addition to its record 4,018 sell-out crowd, Green Bay's 93 points set a new Kress
Center record along with the 34-made field goals. Fans were so eager to see the
Phoenix play, those that couldn't buy a seat were standing in the hallway
watching the game through the glass windows.
Perhaps marketing director Adam Halfmann
summed up Saturday's events best, "It was by far the best day in Phoenix land!"
