CLEVELAND, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay (12-10, 1-1 HL) softball team opened
Horizon League play with an impressive showing against the reigning conference
champs, Cleveland State (18-11, 3-2 HL), on Sunday. The Phoenix split its
doubleheader with the Vikings after the game was delayed one day due to weather
conditions in Cleveland.
Game 1 - Green Bay 3, Cleveland State 0 -
In the first game, Green Bay handed
Cleveland State its fourth shutout of the season with a 3-0 win to start off
Horizon League play. Senior Katie Cooney (East Moline, Ill.) pitched the entire
game for the Phoenix, allowing just one hit while striking out seven batters.
At
the plate the Phoenix scored three runs off four hits, including two in the top
of the sixth. Senior Kendra Woepse (Manitowoc, Wis.) led off the third inning
with a home run to left center field, giving Green Bay the 1-0 lead.
Sara
Junion (Egg Harbor, Wis.) led off the sixth inning with a single to left field
before being thrown out at second on a fielder's choice while Amanda Omahen
(San Diego, Calif.) reached first. With one out, Cooney singled down the right
field line, advancing to second while Omahen advanced to third. With two outs, Jessica
Hrncar (Bristol, Wis.) was pinch running for Cooney and advanced to third on a
wild pitch while Omahen scored to boost the Phoenix lead to 2-0.
Sophomore
Dani Peerenboom (Appleton, Wis.) reached base on an error by the Vikings' shortstop
as Hrncar scored the unearned and final run of the game.
Green
Bay stranded four runners on base throughout seven innings of play.
Game 2 - Green Bay 4, Cleveland State 9 -
The Phoenix kept its bats rolling
against the Vikings, scoring three runs in the first inning in game two of its
doubleheader before falling 9-4.
With
one out and Omahen on first base in the top of the first inning, Cooney reached
base on a fielder's choice, advanced to second, then third on an error while
Omahen scored the unearned run for the Phoenix making it 1-0.
With
Cooney on third, Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) singled to left field scoring
Cooney to boost Green Bay's lead 2-0 before the Phoenix added another unearned
run by Peerenboom to close the inning with the 3-0 advantage.
Cleveland
State scored two runs off three hits in the bottom of the second, cutting the Phoenix
lead to one. The Vikings tied the contest 3-3 in the third before taking the
lead in the fourth off an RBI single with two outs.
In
the fifth inning, the Vikings hit two home runs to boost its lead to four (7-3)
before Green Bay scored its final run of the contest in the sixth inning when Amanda
Pozolinski (Appleton, Wis.) scored on an error.
Cleveland
State secured the win in the sixth inning scoring two runs off two hits. The
rubber match will be played Monday at 10 a.m. at Viking Field.
