GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - UW-Green Bay women's basketball seniors Celeste Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.)
and Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan,
Wis.) have been named to the ninth annual Division I-AAA Athletics Directors
Association Scholar-Athlete Team announced by the Division I-AAA Athletics
Directors Association (DI-AAA ADA). It is the second-consecutive season both
have been named to the women's 11-member team.
"These awards are given yearly to some of the most
outstanding student-athletes in the country and to have both Celeste and Kayla
chosen is another remarkable achievement for our women's basketball program,"
said Athletics Director Ken Bothof.
In addition, Tetschlag was named the Scholar-Athlete
of the Year. The Co-Horizon League Player of the Year is a Business
Administration major, maintaining a GPA of 3.8.
"One needs only to look at Kayla's accomplishments
both academically and athletically to understand why she was chosen Scholar-Athlete
of the Year," Bothof said.
As the Co-Defensive Player of the Year and Co-Horizon
League Player of the year, Hoewisch is a Human Biology (Health Science) major
with a 3.398 GPA.
"I'm
honored to receive this recognition along with so many other great athletes,"
Hoewisch said. "The demands of being a student-athlete are intense and to be
rewarded for hard work both off and on the court is an honor."
On the court, both team captains led the Phoenix to the
program's first NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance, 13th consecutive
regular-season Horizon League championship and 10th Horizon League Tournament
title. In the program's most recent and 12th NCAA Tournament appearance,
Tetschlag had three-consecutive double-double performances while Hoewisch led
Green Bay with eight steals and averaged 13 points per game throughout.
"It is such an honor
to receive the Division I-AAA Scholar-Athlete of the year Award," said
Tetschlag. I think it's important that athletes are also recognized for
their hard work in the classroom, knowing the long hours I spent studying have
paid off for myself and the others recognized."
On the court this season, both team captains led the
Phoenix to the 38-year-old program's first NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance,
13th consecutive regular-season Horizon League championship and 10th Horizon
League Tournament title. In the program's most recent and 12th NCAA Tournament
appearance, Tetschlag had three-consecutive double-double performances while
Hoewisch led Green Bay with eight steals and averaged 13 points per game
throughout the three games.
Both shared Co-Horizon League Player of the Year
honors and were First Team All-League selections while Hoewisch was named
Co-Defensive Player of the Year and Tetschlag was a league All-Defensive Team
honoree.
Now in its 10th year of existence, the Division I-AAA
Athletics Directors Association is comprised of institutions who participate at
the Division I level, but do not sponsor collegiate football at the top two
levels.
All basketball players from Division I-AAA ADA
member institutions are eligible for the awards and each nominee was required
to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in
undergraduate study and have been a starter or important reserve with
legitimate athletics credentials.
