CANFIELD,
Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay (23-22, 9-13 HL) softball
team opened its final series of the 2011 season sweeping Youngstown State
(22-23, 5-15 HL) 4-3 and 13-3 in its doubleheader of the three game series. The
Phoenix outscored the Penguins 17-6 while hitting five home runs throughout 13
innings.
Game
1 - Green Bay 4, Youngstown State 3 - The Phoenix scored three runs in the
top of the third before adding one in the top of the seventh to hold on for the
win. Danielle Peerenboom (Kimberly, Wis.) started the scoring with an RBI
double to left field before scoring Jessica Hrncar (Bristol, Wis.) for the 1-0
lead. Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) scored Peerenboom with an RBI single up the
middle to boost the Green Bay lead to 2-0. The Phoenix finished the inning with
two runs on two hits and one error while stranding one runner on base.
Green Bay scored its only run of the
fourth inning with a lead-off home run by Shannon Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) to
give the Phoenix the 3-0 lead. The Phoenix had two hits while stranding three
runners on base.
The Penguins scored all three of its
runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to knot the game 3-3 with two home runs.
With one out in the top of the seventh,
Rivera hit her sixth home run of the season with a solo shot to right center
field, giving the Phoenix the final 4-3 lead.
Green Bay scored its four runs off
eight hits with Rivera going 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBIs. Katie Cooney
(East Moline, Ill.) improved to 11-11 pitching her 11th complete game of her
senior campaign.
Game
2 - Green Bay 13, Youngstown State 3 - Youngstown State jumped out to an early
2-0 lead in the bottom of the first before Green Bay scored seven runs in the
top of the second inning. Catcher Paige Newtols (Green Bay, Wis.) led off the
scoring with her second home run of the season before Miranda Reinke
(Milwaukee, Wis.) followed with an RBI triple to center field. Cassie Scheel
(Hartland, Wis.) flied out to left field, scoring Reinke to tie the game 2-2.
Green Bay took the 3-2 lead with an RBI
single from Sara Junion (Egg Harbor, Wis.) scoring Haley Andrews (Kirkland,
Wash.). With two outs, senior Kendra Woepse (Manitowoc, Wis.) hit her fifth
home run of the season with a grand slam, boosting the Phoenix lead to 7-2.
Youngstown State added one run in the
bottom of the fourth before the Phoenix added three runs in both the fifth and
sixth innings to close the game with the 13-3 win. Scheel hit a two-run homer
in the fifth while Rivera hit an RBI single scoring Junion. Green Bay's three
runs in the fifth came off five hits while the Phoenix stranded three runners.
Junion hit an RBI sac fly in the sixth
scoring Newtols and boosting the Phoenix lead to 11-3. Amanda Pozolinski (Appleton,
Wis.) hit a two-run RBI single to center field as Green Bay's three runs came
off two hits, sealing the win in six innings of play.
Green Bay finished the contest with 15
hits and no errors while Ali Goecks (Beloit, Wis.) picked up her second win of
the season pitching three innings while striking out three batters for the
Phoenix.
The three-game series will wrap up
Sunday at 11 a.m.
