GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The 2010-11
Green Bay men's tennis team was well-represented on the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association's list of Division I Academic Awards, which was released on Monday.
The Phoenix received the ITA's academic team award, while five players were
selected as ITA Scholar-Athletes.
"We had a tremendous year in competition and in the classroom," Phoenix head coach Mark Thomas said. "I am very proud of our players' commitment to excel as student-athletes. I'd like to thank assistant coach Bryan Vescio and academic coordinator Mike Kline for their time and efforts in helping the team achieve this academic success."
Green Bay was one of 71
Division I schools in the nation to post a 3.2 or higher grade-point average in
2010-11, qualifying the squad as an ITA All-Academic Team. All varsity
letterwinners counted toward the team GPA.
Five of those
letterwinners - Erik Finkenbrink (Duelman, Germany), Fabian Gogolin
(Cologne, Germany), Henning Jess (Kaltenkirchen, Germany), Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Mike Wesley (Franklin, Wis.) -
earned a 3.5 GPA or better to qualify for the list of ITA Scholar-Athletes.
Leading the way was Gogolin, a senior, who posted a perfect 4.0 mark.
On the
courts, the Phoenix posted a program-best 16-8 record (6-1 Horizon League) and finished as
the runners-up in the Horizon League Championship.
