GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Former Green Bay women's basketball standout Celeste
Hoewisch (Hortonville, Wis.) has accepted a one-year contract to play
professionally for the LKS SIEMENS AGD LODZ Basketball Team in Poland.
Hoewisch initially had planned on joining former teammate
Kayla Tetschlag (Sheboygan, Wis.) in Belgium but with the variation between
leagues in Europe, only one American is allowed to play on each team in the
league Tetschlag now plays in.
"I'm going to miss playing with Kayla a lot but this gives
us a chance to visit each other and still stay in contact, and I know she's
going to be great in Belgium," Hoewisch said.
"It's a great league, a lot of WNBA players and she'll get
better playing against that type of competition," said Green Bay head coach
Matt Bollant. "I think they'll be very thankful they got Celeste."
Hoewisch's new team is part of the Poland-PLKK League which
features two Americans, including Lauren Prochaska, a former standout at
Bowling Green State University who also plays in the WNBA.
Though Hoewisch has been preparing for this moment her whole
life, from the moment she received the call from her agent to the moment she
leaves the U.S. is only one week.
"I'm really excited and happy to have finally landed
something," said Hoewisch. "I was nervous because it was getting late but had
confidence in the people around me trying to help."
LKS SIEMENS AGD LODZ is already in preseason with its first
regular season game slated for Oct. 1.
