Swanson Wins Singles Title at Purdue Invitational

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - Green Bay men's tennis senior Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) took home the Flight B singles championship on Sunday at the 11-team Purdue Invitational. Swanson won five matches over three days in the 45-player field at the Schwartz Tennis Center to earn the title.

Swanson was victorious in a pair of matches on Sunday to clinch the championship, taking down two opponents from Toledo. The senior first defeated Rockets junior Terence Weigand in the semifinals 6-3, 6-2, and then cruised past freshman Grant Adams 6-2, 6-0 in the championship match.

"I can't say enough about the outstanding performance of Paul Swanson this weekend," Phoenix head coach Mark Thomas said. "He's a senior that comes to practice every day with 100 percent intensity and enthusiasm, which is a great foundation for a team looking to build into a conference contender."

In addition to his individual title, Swanson paired up with freshman Michael Tebon (Excelsior, Minn.) to win the Flight B doubles consolation bracket on Sunday. The duo defeated Drake's team of Cesar Brancho and Ryan Drake 8-4 in the final match.

Phoenix freshman Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) was in the final four of the Flight A singles main draw on Sunday, but dropped his opening match of the day to DePaul's Filip Dzanko (3-6, 6-1, 7-5). The newcomer won three matches over the weekend in his first college tournament.

"Overall we had a great weekend," Thomas said. "I am very optimistic about the direction of our program and the ability of our players. Our results were good, but we have several areas to improve on that will make our players more complete and improve our results in the future."

Green Bay is back in action next weekend at the Bradley Invitational in Peoria, Ill. The three-day tourney begins Friday and wraps up on Sunday.
