GREEN BAY, Wis.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay (4-2-1, 1-0-0) men's soccer team honored its alumni and opened
up Horizon League play with a 2-1 win over Loyola (1-6-1, 0-1-0) Saturday at
Aldo Santaga Stadium. All three goals in the game were scored in less than four
minutes of play in the second half.
Green Bay's first goal of the game came with 22 minutes left
in the second half following a Loyola foul. Senior Tony Walls (Wauwatosa, Wis.)
took the free kick finding Aaron Cranfill (New Berlin, Wis.) for his first goal
of the season to give the Phoenix the 1-0 lead.
Following two yellow cards, Green Bay caught Loyola on their
heels when Andrew Stone (Green Bay, Wis.) passed the ball from midfield,
finding Alonso Flores (Chicago, Ill.) for his second goal of the season to give
the Phoenix the 2-0 cushion.
"The one thing we said at halftime that was missing in the
game was the number on the scoreboard," said head coach Kris Kelderman. "We
challenged them at halftime to finish on restarts, because we were getting a
lot of opportunities."
The Ramblers marched down the field and cut the Phoenix lead
in half when Eric Nock scored deep in the box to make it 2-1. Green Bay's
defense remained tough, allowing Loyola just three shots in the half.
The Phoenix outshot the Ramblers 21-4 and 12-0 on corner
kicks in the contest.
Green Bay also controlled the first half of play outshooting Loyola
10-1 and 8-0 on corner kicks.
"We came out controlled and with good energy in the first
half and a considerable differences on corners and shots," Kelderman said. "We
were just missing that final pass, which we talked about at halftime, and got
it done in the second half."
During halftime of the game, Phoenix alumni were recognized
for the dedication to the Green Bay men's soccer program while Stuart Grable
(Neenah, Wis.) was awarded the annual Aldo Santaga Scholarship. The scholarship
is awarded to a senior who has demonstrated academic and athletic excellence
throughout his career.
The Phoenix will begin its second four-game road trip of the
season Sept. 28 as it travels to in-state, Horizon League rival Milwaukee (3-4-0)
to battle the Panthers for the Chancellor's Cup at 7 p.m. Green Bay will play
at UIC Oct. 1 followed by DePaul Oct. 5 before wrapping up the stint at Tulsa
Oct. 8.
