PEORIA, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) -
The Green Bay men's tennis team
turned in a strong performance over the weekend at the Hotels at Grand
Prairie Classic, hosted by Bradley University at the David Markin Tennis
Courts. Two Phoenix men won their respective
individual flights, as Erik Finkenbrink (Duelman, Germany) and
Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) both posted unbeaten records in the three-day invitational.
Green Bay finished with a 16-8 overall singles record, including a 14-2 mark in the top four flights.
Finkenbrink went
4-0 on the weekend to win the No. 1 singles flight. The junior began by
defeating Saint Louis' Bobby Kidera (6-2, 6-1) and Bradley's Gabriel
Townes (2-6, 6-2, 10-6) on Friday before taking
down IUPUI's Ivan Mojsejev (6-0, 6-0) on Saturday and SDSU's Justin
Pyle (6-1, 6-1) on Sunday.
Swanson also posted
an unblemished 4-0 mark to take home the No. 3 singles title. On Friday
the senior defeated Parker Lawley of SDSU (6-2, 6-1), then knocked off
Bradley's Juan Diego Cudrado (6-3, 6-1) on
Saturday. Swanson finished with two more wins on Sunday, beating
IUPUI's Nick Volz (6-1, 6-1) and Saint Louis' Yehia El-Sallaly (Default -
Injury).
Phoenix freshman
Michael Tenzer also had a good showing in flight No. 2, leaving with a
3-1 record. Tenzer finished strong with a pair of wins on Sunday,
defeating SDSU's Dominic Rossetto (6-2, 6-0) and Saint
Louis' Joe Flanagan (7-6 (4), 6-2).
Craig Cox
(Surrey, England) won all three of his matches in flight No. 4. The
junior picked up wins over SDSU's Jamie Dash (7-6 (4), 6-2), Saint
Louis'
Vuk Poledica (6-4, 1-0) and IUPUI's Joel Modesitt (6-3, 6-4).
Swanson and Cox
teamed up to form Green Bay's top doubles team, earning a 3-1 record in
flight No. 2. The tandem edged IUPUI's pair of Modesiit/Volz 9-8 (3) on
Friday, then beat Saint Louis' Flanagan/El-Sallaly
8-4 on Saturday and SDSU's Thorp/Lawley 8-3 on Sunday. The pair finally
fell to Bradley's Kalhorn/Al Bitar 8-3 in their final match.

to action next weekend when it travels to the Ball State Invitational,
which begins Friday and concludes on Sunday.
