Green Bay Opens Season with UNI Dome Tournament

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay (1-3) softball team opened its 2012 season going 1-3 in the UNI-Dome softball tournament held in Ames, Iowa Feb. 11-12. The tournament was moved from the Northern Iowa campus to Ames, Iowa due to mechanical failure on the machine used to put down the turf in the UNI-Dome.

The tournament included Green Bay, North Dakota, Valparaiso, Nebraska-Omaha, Iowa State, Western Illinois, Drake and UNI.

GAME 1 - Green Bay 7, Nebraska-Omaha 1 - The Phoenix opened its season with a 7-1 win over Nebraska-Omaha while scoring two runs in both the second and fifth inning before adding three in the sixth.

The Mavericks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with an RBI in the top of the first with one out on the board. With one out in the bottom of the second inning, Green Bay freshman Hailey Mohrfeld (Menominee Falls, Wis.) hit a single before advancing to second on the throw, scoring Amanda Omahen (San Diego, Calif.) and knotting the game 1-1.

With two outs and two runners on base, Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) hit an RBI single scoring Ashleigh Racer (Waterford, Wis.), giving Green Bay the 2-1 lead. The Phoenix closed the inning scoring two runs on two hits while leaving three on base.

After two-and-a-half scoreless innings, with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Green Bay scored off an RBI single from Jessica Hrncar (Bristol, Wis.). Amanda Pozolinski (Appleton, Wis.) scored an unearned run on the play to boost the Phoenix lead to 4-1. Green Bay stranded one runner on base while scoring two runs on three hits.

With runners on first and second as a result of walks, senior Alli Rivera (Geneseo, Ill.) hit an RBI double scoring Mohrfeld. With two outs, sophomore Stacey Butts (Milwaukee, Wis.) hit an RBI double scoring two runs, securing the 7-1 Phoenix win.

Green Bay finished the game scoring seven runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) pitched a complete game, striking out five batters while allowing 13 hits.

GAME 2 - Green Bay 1, Northern Iowa 9 - Host UNI scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning before adding four in the bottom of the second to hand the Phoenix its first loss of the season.

Green Bay's lone run came in the top of the fifth with two outs when Omahen hit an RBI double down the left field line, scoring Danielle Peerenboom (Appleton, Wis.). The Phoenix closed the inning scoring one run on three hits while stranding two runners on base.

Green Bay had four hits and one error in the game.

GAME 3 - Green Bay 2, Drake 8 - The Bulldogs scored five runs in the top of the fifth and had an 8-0 lead before the Phoenix was able to put a run on the board in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs in the bottom of the third, Hrncar hit a double, giving Green Bay a runner on base. Mohrfeld followed up with an RBI double, scoring Hrncar. The Phoenix scored one run on two hits while stranding three runners on base in the inning.

Green Bay added its final run in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded when Peerenboom reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Stacey Butts (Milwaukee, Wis).

The Phoenix finished the game scoring two runs on three hits while committing two errors in the 8-2 loss.

GAME 4 - Green Bay 2, Iowa State 3 - After a 2-2 tie heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, Iowa State scored the game-winning run off a leadoff homerun.

With two outs in the top of the second inning and runners on first and third, Racer hit a two-run RBI double scoring Omahen and Paige Newtols (Green Bay, Wis.) for the 2-0 lead. The Cyclones scored two runs off four hits in the bottom of the inning to knot the game 2-2.

After three-and-a-half scoreless innings, Iowa State's Erica Miller hit a solo homerun to give the Cyclones the eventual 3-2 win over the Phoenix.

Allison Goecks (Beloit, Wis.) took the mound for the Phoenix, allowing three runs off nine hits while striking out one batter.

ON DECK... Green Bay will have three weeks to prepare for its annual spring break trip to Florida as it will participate in the Under Armour Showcase Mar. 9-11 in Clearwater, Fla. and Rebel Spring Games Mar. 13-17 in Orlando.
