ORLANDO
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay
men's tennis team (9-3) began its spring break trip to Orlando, Fla., with a
7-0 victory on Monday against Webber International University (11-4) - the 18th-ranked
NAIA school in the country.
The Phoenix began the match by dominating the three
doubles contests to earn the doubles point. Freshmen Felix Goepper (Seelbach,
Germany) and Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) coasted past the Warriors' duo
of Daniel Spurny and Joonas Jalkanen 8-1 at the top spot, while Michael Tebon
(Excelsior, Minn.) and Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) also earned an 8-1
result at the No. 3 spot.
The Phoenix won all but won singles match in straight
sets. Junior Erik Finkenbrink (Duelman, Germany) defeated Spurny 6-3, 6-4 at
No. 1, while Swanson took down Jalkanen 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2. Green Bay junior
Craig Cox (Surrey, England) recovered after dropping his opening set (6-3) to Webber's
Alwin Leysner, rallying back for the 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory in the No. 5 slot.
Green Bay returns to action on Wednesday in Orlando with a 6 p.m.
contest against Lynn University - the fifth-ranked Division II squad, followed
by a 2 p.m. meeting with Abraham Baldwin on Thursday.
