ORLANDO (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay men's tennis team closed out its spring trip to Florida on Thursday with a 6-1 victory over Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, the No. 6 junior college team in the country.
The Golden Fillies proved to be tough competition, as all six singles players and one doubles team were ranked among JUCOs.
The Phoenix began the match by earning hard-fought victories in each of the three doubles contests to take the 1-0 lead. The Green Bay duo of Felix Goepper (Seelbach, Germany) and Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) - the No. 61 doubles team in NCAA Division I - led the way with a 9-8 victory over ABAC's Danilo Faria and Oliver Snaider at the No. 1 spot.
Green Bay then took five of the six singles matches against the Fillies' six ranked opponents for the 6-1 win. Senior Paul Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn.) earned a comeback victory at No. 2, rallying for 6-2, 10-6 wins in the second and third sets after dropping the opener 3-6 to fourth-ranked Hernan Hatem.
Also winning in straight sets for the Phoenix were Erik Finkenbrink (Duelman, Germany) at No. 3, Goepper at No. 4, Craig Cox (Surrey, England) at No. 5 and Christoph Hopfe (Castrop Rauxel, Germany) at No. 6.
Green Bay is next in action with a pair of matches in Des Moines, Iowa on March 24-25, facing UMKC at 5 p.m. on Saturday and No. 45 Drake at 11 a.m. Sunday.
