DES MOINES,
Iowa (GreenBayPhoenix.com) - In its first match following its
spring break trip to Florida, the Green Bay men's tennis team picked up a 6-1
win over UMKC in a neutral-site contest in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday. The
Phoenix improved to 11-4 on the year with the win, while the Kangaroos fell to
1-12.
Green Bay began the contest by taking two of the three
doubles matches to earn the doubles point. The nationally-ranked tandem (No.
61) of Felix Goepper (Seelbach,
Germany) and Michael Tenzer (Neuried,
Germany) picked up a 9-7 win over UMKC's Tim Akhmedov and Grant Fleming at the
No. 1 spot, while Craig Cox (Surrey,
England) and Erik Finkenbrink
(Duelman, Germany) secured the point with an 8-6 win at No. 2.
Tenzer and Finkenbrink each earned hard-fought,
three-set wins in singles action, as Tenzer defeated Tomas Patino 6-3, 5-7,
10-8 at the No. 2 spot and Finkenbrink battled to a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory at
No. 3.
Cox dominated his singles contest at the No. 4 spot,
routing UMKC's Connor Edwards 6-1, 6-2. Christoph Hopfe (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) and Gary Notkin (Plymouth, Minn.) also earned convincing wins at No. 5 and No. 6.
Hopfe cruised past Akhmedov 6-2, 6-2 in the fifth slot, while Notkin pulled out
a 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 6.
The Phoenix is back in action Sunday morning in Des
Moines when it faces No. 45 Drake at 11 a.m.
