VALPARAISO, Ind.
(GreenBayPhoenix.com) - The Green Bay softball (10-12, 0-3 HL) team wrapped
up its Horizon League opening series falling 4-3 to Valparaiso (20-10, 6-0 HL)
Sunday at VU Softball Field in Valparaiso, Ind. Green Bay took a 1-0 lead in
the fourth inning before the Crusaders scored all four of its runs in the
bottom of the sixth.
Freshman Hailey Mohrfeld (Menominee Falls, Wis.) led off the fourth
inning of play with a solo homerun to center field, giving the Phoenix the 1-0
advantage.
Green Bay added two more runs in the top of the sixth when Alli Rivera
(Geneseo, Ill.) hit a two-run homer to center field scoring Danielle Peerenboom (Appleton, Wis.) to boost the Phoenix
lead to 3-0. The homerun was Rivera's 15th of her career and 91st RBI, both
individual career program records.
The Crusaders scored four runs off six hits, including an RBI single
and RBI double in the sixth inning of play. Green Bay was able to put the tying
run on base in the seventh inning but Valpo's defense held for the 4-3 win.
Sophomore Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) pitched the entire game
for the Phoenix, allowing nine hits while striking out one batter.
Green Bay continues Horizon League play in a three-game series at
Detroit Apr. 6-7. The Phoenix hosts Butler in a double header in its home
opener Saturday, Apr. 14 at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. at Ben Garot Softball Field.
